Health Insurance

Effective April 1, 2012, International students are eligible for Manitoba Health coverage - if they have a valid study permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) for a minimum of six months and also live in the province for a minimum of six months in a calendar year.

Spouses and children of eligible students are also covered if they have visitor visas or are listed on the study permit and live in the province for a minimum of six months. Health coverage is only provided while the study permit is valid.

What is covered by Manitoba Health?

Manitoba Health directly pays for medical care required, including visits to a health care provider, surgery and diagnostic tests. If a student is hospitalized, the province also covers:

 accommodation and meals at the standard level;

 nursing services;

 diagnostic and lab tests;

 medications given in the hospital;

 costs associated with surgery, including anaesthesia and surgical supplies;

 occupational, speech and physiotherapy; and

 dietary counselling

How do you get a Manitoba Health card?

The University of Winnipeg requires international students to register with Manitoba Health as soon as they arrive in Manitoba. Registration forms can be printed from Manitoba Health and either submitted in person or mailed to Manitoba Health’s Registration and Client Services at 300 Carlton Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3B 3M9. Students must provide a photocopy of their study permit at the time of application.

What if you are not eligible? 

International students who are studying in Manitoba for a period of time that is less than six months are not eligible for Manitoba Health coverage. These ineligible students will be able to purchase equivalent basic health care coverage as a part of their registration process at The University of Winnipeg. Please visit the International Student Office for assistance.

Current UW Students who are insured under MISHIP with Great West Life

While students who have obtained their MB Health Card effective April 1, 2012, may wish to cancel their additional MISHIP coverage, please note the following:

 MISHIP coverage is cancelled on the date that a copy of the Manitoba Health card is provided to AON with supporting documents (it is never backdated to the date of issue on the Manitoba Health card).

 Partial refunds are based on the number of remaining months (or ‘unused’ months of coverage after cancellation).

 Refunds for less than 4 months of unused MISHIP coverage will not be processed.

We are strongly encouraging international students to continue your coverage until a replacement extended health benefits plan is in place. The University of Winnipeg is currently in the process of working with health care benefit providers to determine the best plan for extended student health coverage.

NOTE:  The University assumes no liability for any failure by the student to maintain adequate medical, hospital, vision or dental insurance, nor is the University responsible for any costs not covered by the student’s personal insurance plan(s).

Should you wish to cancel your extended coverage, you must visit the AonHewitt office in person, mail a copy of all documents or send an email with the following information:
1. Letter to state that they are cancelling
2. Copy of MISHIP card
3. Copy of MB Health card
